Verizon Galaxy S III 4G LTE smartphone pre-orders hit June 6th for $199

We will be having lots of Samsung Galaxy S III news over the next few days so be prepared to enjoy it. Samsung yesterday confirmed 5 major US carriers would all receive their new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III smartphone starting in June. Already this morning we are getting official announcements from multiple camps and Verizon has just confirmed theirs. More details on their LTE version and low price after the break.

Verizon has confirmed the samsung Galaxy S III with their nations largest 4G LTE network will be available for pre-order starting June 6th for just $199. Previous 4G LTE devices have been bumped up to $299 so I’m extremely happy to see the price return to what I call “normal” pricing. Verizon’s model (and probably all US carriers) will not get the quad-core version, and instead will be rocking Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHz dual-core S4 Snapdragon processor, which we’ve seen in the HTC One S and One X to be very capable. Other specs remain the same with a 4.8-inch 720p HD display, 2GB of RAM, 4G LTE, 2,100 mAh battery and that impressive 8 megapixel camera.

Verizon has also unleashed their landing page for the Galaxy S III, which gives you additional details, and you can sign up for email alerts and news for when they’ll start accepting pre-orders and more. Just like others, Verizon will be offering the SGSIII in a $199 16GB model, as well as 32GB $249 flavor. We are also hearing from Droid-Life that full retail pricing (if you don’t want to sign a contract and lose that unlimited data plan) will be $599 and $649 respectively.
It appears the last few weeks on June are going to be exciting with everyone launching their Galaxy S III versions. Verizon didn’t announce an exact date for when it will be available, and only stated the pre-order date. Hopefully they don’t blow this launch like the did the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Samsung Galaxy player 4.2 Review and features

Samsung has continued its push of Android WiFi devices for the media consumption crowd with their all-new Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 iPod rival. The Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 aims to take on media players of all shapes and sizes coming with great specs, a large screen, impressive sound output and more all for a low price. This is everything a high quality Samsung smartphone is, only without the phone parts. Read on for our full review and conclusion.

Just like their tablets, Samsung has a wide array of sizes for Samsung Galaxy Players too. We’ve reviewed a few (linked below) but today will be focusing on the new and improved size and design of the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2. Complete with decent specs and a simple user interface this device is what Samsung hopes will reach the hands of Android fans needing an iPod replacement.
Hardware
In a similar design fashion as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (thanks Apple) the speaker grills have actually been moved to the front. A design I’ve been wanting forever and that makes this device just awesome. The speakers on the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 really steal the show and make it a worthy purchase if you ask me. As far as hardware you’ll get a 4.2-inch 480×800 display, a 1.0 GHz single-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage. Unlike the iPod this however has a micro-SD slot so you can add as much space as you’d like.
As you can see above, the design is awesome and is a perfect blend of the Samsung Galaxy S III and a tablet. Taking the same hardware home button and two capacitive touch buttons for controls and tossing large and loud speaker grills on both sides for optimal audio bliss. To complete the specs we have a 2 megapixel camera on the rear (no 720p video recording), a VGA front camera if you care to use it, a decent 1,500 mAh battery under the hood and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
The design is very sleek and simple. In the video below I compare it to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and the only buttons we have is the power button, volume up/down on the right. Then the bottom gets the 3.5mm headphone jack and a charging port. Very minimal — but in a good way. The only downside to the hardware is the capacitive buttons seem a bit dim, and the dedicated home button doesn’t feel extremely sturdy. Neither of these are a big concern though, just me nitpicking.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 hands-on

As you saw from the video the phone looks great, but it also feels great in the hand. The hardware is top notch although it uses the usual Samsung cheapy plastic — but I’d hardly consider that a con. If you like Samsung products and smartphones you’ll love the Samsung Galaxy Player. One last time I must comment on the speaker and audio quality. Obviously while listening through the provided headphones the device sounds great, but while playing games like the pre-installed Need For Speed the two stereo speakers sound amazing. Seriously it is that good, and beats any smartphone or media players built-in audio that I’ve used thus far. I was really blown away and enjoyed it immensely.
Software Specification
The Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 sadly comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and will probably never see an upgrade to Android 4.0 ICS, but it doesn’t really need it. Obviously having the latest and greatest would be nice, but it runs great on 2.3 and has Samsung’s Touch Wiz UX changes to give it that extra polish. Running on a 1.0 GHz single-core processor the device runs quick enough. It’s no Galaxy S III but it doesn’t need to be. It handled all the games I tried with ease, daily usage was smooth and fluid, and it doesn’t need to be a powerhouse — especially at $199.

As far as games go you’ve already seen a few hints from the pictures or video above. Out of the box you’ll get a few classics like Angry Birds and Tetris, but Samsung also added Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and FIFA Soccer 2012 to the device for free — which is a nice touch. I found NFS more addicting than I thought it would be. Who knew racing through streets and running from cops could be so much fun. The loud sirens and awesome sound effects enhanced by the stereo speaker grills probably helped out here too.
Unlike some knock-off devices the Player 4.2 comes with full Google support. We have Gmail, Google Play Store, Google Music, and everything else we’ve come to expect on our smartphones, even Google Maps with full GPS support so long as you have a WiFi connection.
As usual we ran a quick benchmark just for fun, because we know you Android crazies love that stuff. Obviously running an older 1.0 GHz single-core processor it doesn’t beat any records, but works great for what Samsung’s intended it for.

Camera Specification
The Galaxy Player is mainly a media consumption device. To be nice Sammy added a front and rear camera to the device but they aren’t only there to complete the package. The 2 megapixel camera worked good enough for the usual Facebook photos, but I’d stop at that. Video recording wasn’t capable of 720p but it handled video quite well. Below is a video sample and a few photos using the Galaxy Player 4.2.
2 megapixel camera video sample

Camera samples

Battery Life
We don’t get the biggest battery life we’ve seen in a mobile device, but then it doesn’t need it. The Samsung Galaxy Player doesn’t have a huge 4.8-inch screen or a quad-core processor, nor does it have 3G and 4G LTE sucking away the battery. Instead Samsung’s added a 1,500 mAh battery that should last the average user plenty long. Obviously if you play games for 4 hours straight you’ll probably be pushing your luck but I’ve managed good battery life. I streamed music for 3 days straight, 72 hours without the battery dying. With average music streaming, a few gaming sessions, and updating a few apps I still managed almost 3 days of usage as you saw in the video. It’s safe to say battery life shouldn’t be a concern for this media player.
Wrap-Up
If we had to choose a Galaxy Player from the Samsung lineup this new 4.2 would clearly be it. The 3.6 and smaller options are too small now we are used to large screens, and the 5.0-inch model is a bit large and thick. Compared to the competition like the iPod Touch the Galaxy Player has a bigger screen, better sound, Android (of course) and unlimited amounts of storage thanks to a micro-SD slot.

Coming in at only $199 for the 8GB Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 this is a hard deal to pass up for anyone that needs a dedicated media device. I currently just use my Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but I’m sure there are users that would like a separate media player. My only concern is once the rumored Google Nexus 7-inch tablet and others start arriving for the same $199 price point will this be priced too high? Or is the small portable MP3 player size just what users are looking for. That my friends, is up to you.

Available starting today is the all new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10-inch tablet. Thanks to Samsung we’ve got it right here to put through the paces and check out the newly refined design and speaker grill placements. It appears Samsung is taking two approaches on tablets. One being a more budget-friendly Tab like the Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch and the 10 we have today, and then their top end will be the quad-core Galaxy Note 10.1 coming this summer. This new slate is clearly a media consumption device, and it works great. Read on for our full review.

The Tab 2 10-inch was rumored to be delayed in favor of a quad-core processor but that wasn’t the case. Instead Samsung has opted for a cheaper 1.0 GHz dual-core processor (not a Tegra 2 like the original Tab 10) but instead a Texas Instruments dual-core chip. Don’t worry though folks, it performs great and is being offered at a friendly price starting at $399 for the 16GB model. We’ll start with the hands-on and tour video below then dig into the details.

Hardware Specification
With the new Tab 2 the hardware has seen a few design and internal changes but for the most part is very similar to the original Galaxy Tab 10 from Samsung last year. What you’ll get here is a different processor, a sleek design, better speaker placements and a lower price point. Like mentioned above, under the hood is a 1.0 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and it comes with 16GB of internal storage. However Samsung did provide a micro-sd slot for additional storage. Then we have the usual 3 megapixel camera on the rear, and a 1.3 front for video chatting and self portraits.

Samsung has taken what they learned from the first 10-inch model, their recently released Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE, and the smaller Tab 7 and added everything into one. Gone is the cheap feeling plastic back and instead we have a brushed aluminum designed plastic back that feels very durable. Then they’ve added the SD slot, and the Infrared port from the older 7-inch model for controlling your home theater or TV.

All of the controls are actually up top with nothing on either side of the slate. We have from left to right the power and wake button, volume up/down, micro-SD slot, Infrared eye, and the 3.5mm headphone jack. The front half has a dark grey shiny aluminum while the back keeps that brushed rugged and durable look. I’m actually a total fan of this latest model and it might be my favorite Galaxy Tab to date.

I’ve always hated the rear or bottom facing speakers on tablets, especially if there’s only one like the Transformer Prime. The new Galaxy Tab’s have been improved and offer a pair of front facing stereo speakers. The new Galaxy Tab 2 10-inch model we have here today by far has the best audio of any tablet I’ve tested to date. They are clear, crisp, and get extremely loud. Not only that but you don’t have to worry about your hand covering them up during use. This makes the tablet much easier to hold, gaming is loud and exciting, and streaming Netflix (which comes pre-installed) is better than ever.

The 10-inch screen is still only 1280 x 800 like most tablets available, and isn’t AMOLED but sure is bright, vivid, and seems to have similar viewing angles to most Samsung tablets. Their displays are never much of an issue anyways and always are good quality with Sammy. The lightweight design also doesn’t add any weight over the first Tab 10, and it’s much lighter than the heavy quad-core ASUS Transformer Prime.

Software Specification
Samsung has released these tablets with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the OS. With their own tablet-optimized version of TouchWiz over the top that offers impressive widgets, screenshot features with edit mode, and a new keyboard that is actually really nice to type on compared to the stock ICS tablet keyboard. The changes are lightweight and performance remains strong and usage is swift.

Like mentioned above, Samsung appears to be going for a cheaper consumption device here and will be targeting the high range with the 10-inch note. The Galaxy Tab 2 comes pre-loaded with tons of media apps such as Samsung Music Hub, Music Player, a custom video player, Netflix, a photo and video editor, as well as Peel smart remote to use the Infrared. Clearly this is all about consuming media with this WiFi tablet and so far I’ve done plenty of that. Playing games and watching movies is awesome with the improved speakers up front.

Performance
Being only a 1.0 GHz dual-core processor this is actually one of the lower spec’d devices released in the past 6 months in the dual-core category. With everything lately coming with 1.2 or 1.5 GHz dual-cores or higher at first we questioned Samsung’s choice. After using this for the past week I can safely say so far I don’t miss the speeds. Usage is solid, performance is great for movies, games like Grand Theft Auto III and more. Sadly we can’t access those TegraZone THD games because they’ve moved from NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 to a Texas Instruments processor, but most games are still available in the Google Play Store.

Obviously you can see where she lies in regards to benchmark tests such as AnTuTu. With many devices including the quad-core ASUS Transformer Prime blowing past its results, but that was sort of expected. Only scoring 3000 in Quadrant this is hardly an improvement over the original, more of an additional option for those in the market. Needless to say, from my video above you can clearly see performance is still stellar even though benchmark results are low. For $399 this tablet rocks.

Camera and Battery life

With the new Tab 2 the camera isn’t anything great, just like all of Samsung’s tablets. I guess they don’t see a need to offer a better camera and the Tab 2 comes with the same 3.2 megapixel camera all the others have. Their smartphones have excellent cameras but tablets are another story. I’d hardly consider this a con though, as I rarely if ever take pictures with my tablet. Below is a few pictures for those curious on the performance. As long as you have enough light it will take a few pictures with ease that are worthy of Facebook and the likes.

Battery life however is pretty awesome. Samsung’s equipped this slate with a 7,100 mAh battery and I’ve manged to get nearly 3 days of casual usage from a single charge. While usage will vary from user to user this is on par if not better than most tablets on the market as long as you don’t watch Netflix for 6 hours a day.

Wrap-Up
From the media apps and widgets, Netflix, Peel Smart Remote and more it’s clear that this tablet is made to play and enjoy media. Offering hardly any difference over the original other than mainly the speakers and Ice Cream Sandwich coming stock — this tablet is about the same. I’d say I was disappointed with how similar they are but I’m not. For the price they’ll be asking ($399) this is an great tablet experience. The hardware is excellent, build quality is top notch and creak free, and it comes with the latest Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

If you were wanting or expecting a powerhouse Ice Cream Sandwich tablet or gaming machine the Galaxy Note 10.1 will be their flagship quad-core tablet once it’s made available later this summer. If you don’t want to wait, for the price point your options are this tablet or the Transformer Pad TF300. It does offer a quad-core processor but it’s not as premium feeling, has a plastic design, and isn’t as thin and beautiful. If you want the work horse the TF300 is for you, if you’d like a thin and awesome overall experience the new Galaxy Tab 2 10-inch from Samsung is worth a look.

LG Viper 4G LTE with Google Wallet makes your life easier

LG Viper 4G LTE with Google Wallet makes life easier

Last month LG released their new LG Viper 4G LTE for the Now Network. Although 4G LTE still isn’t quite available one of the other important and awesome features of LG’s Viper is NFC capabilities. Coming out of the box with Google Wallet we decided to give you all an actual first hand look at using Google Wallet to make a purchase or pay for parking using the LG Viper 4G LTE. It’s little things like the low price, and Google Wallet that makes life easier with LG.

Now Google Wallet has been available since late last year but hasn’t seen the attention or widespread use we all thought. With a few vulnerabilities fixed and Google possibly thinking about sharing revenues with carriers hopefully this new way of eCommerce will start to flourish. Not only is the new LG Viper 4G LTE a powerful dual-core phone, but it’s extremely affordable, and a great mid-range phone with tons of high points like the upcoming LTE and NFC options. You can check out our full review here before enjoying our Google Wallet hands-on below.
LG Viper 4G LTE Google Wallet hands-on

After that quick little tour of Google Wallet on the LG Viper 4G LTE you can see just how extremely simple and easy it is to manage things using the two together. LG’s been having fun with their “Dad Wallet” campaign over at Facebook.com/LGUSAMobile and you can join in on Facebook. Asking fans to submit pictures of their parents huge wallets full of junk, and in return why they should replace that bulky wallet with a new smartphone and Google Wallet like I’ve done myself.
Essentially what it all comes down to is the LG Viper 4G LTE is an awesome Android smartphone that any parent would love for Mother’s Day or the upcoming Father’s Day. It’s powerful, budget-friendly, and will help simplify your social and work life with 4G LTE speeds and convenient features like NFC with Google Wallet and more.
